Young burn survivors head to camp for fun and emotional healing

Camp Courage is a free program that offers therapeutic camp activities to burn survivors.

PHOENIX - Young burn survivors are getting a chance to hang out with friends and just be a kid for the next week.

Every year the Arizona Burn Foundation hosts kids from across the Valley, Nevada and even Mexico at their Camp Courage in Prescott.

For the next week, 80 children are headed to camp this year.

The program, now in its 28th year, is free and offers therapeutic camp activities.

This is 13-year-old Jada Lecato’s third year attending.

“I was burned by boiling water, so I have second degree burns.” said Lecato.

She likes to make sure the younger campers feel at home.

Lori Janik with the Arizona Burn Center said the camp is more like a healing retreat.

“The hospital heals them physically from their burn injuries, but socially and emotionally they really tend to struggle when they are back home to their environment.”

Though their stories and injuries differ, they all have a message of awareness. First, being careful around fire.

“It can happen to anyone,” said Jada’s mother Ebony.

But also, awareness that event though they’ve been through a lot they’re still just kids.

“Everyone’s burn has a pain to it whether how little or big, but we are all just people,” said Lecato.
