Verify: Will Arizona legalize recreational marijuana?

Is there enough support in Arizona to legalize recreational marijuana?

Three states voted to legalize marijuana in various forms after Tuesday's election: Missouri and Utah voters approved medical marijuana, and Michigan voters legalized recreational marijuana. So what would it take to legalize marijuana in Arizona? And is there support for it?

Jim Brown was one of the first medical marijuana licensees in Arizona. He said he expects Arizona to legalize recreational pot in the next five years.

"There's going to have to be an organized effort that starts in the next 90 days or so," Brown said. "The next thing is we've got to get bipartisan support for this."

And, Brown said, it will take a lot of funding to run the campaign.

But what about support? Legalization has been floated almost every year and failed every year.

But a recent Pew poll showed 66 percent of people across the country approve of legalized recreational marijuana. In Arizona, 62 percent of people say marijuana should be legal and taxed.

Brown said the previous legalization measures in Arizona haven't hit the right balance to get widespread support.

So we can verify there is enough support to legalize marijuana, but only if the right measure comes along.
