VERIFY: Why are Americans dying younger?

But, it's not all bad news.

PHOENIX - A new CDC report shows American life expectancy rates are declining. The culprit: a rise in suicide and overdose deaths.

The CDC report on the health of the nation found life expectancy to continue its decrease, as America falls further behind the life expectancy in other developed countries.

But, it’s not all bad news.

Deaths from cancer, respiratory disease and stroke have decreased. Smoking rates have declined along with infant mortality rates.

However, the good news has been offset by rises in the overdose and suicide death rates.

Overdose deaths went up by 72 percent in a 16-year period, while suicide rates went up 23 percent.

Gov. Doug Ducey signed a law back in January, aimed at fighting the opioid crisis.

The measure limits opioid prescriptions to five-day dosage, and set aside $10 million to help those without health insurance get addiction treatment.
