This community college will be rocking Nike uniforms celebrating Native American Heritage Month

The men's and women's basketball team at Mesa Community College will wear special Nike uniforms in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

The colors represent harmony, fellowship and friendship and on Dec. 1 the men's and women's basketball teams at Mesa Community College will be donning the special Nike uniforms in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

MCC will be the first two-year college to wear the special N7 Nike uniforms, a brand that aims to "inspire and enable" Native American and Aboriginal youth to be active and involved in sports.

The uniforms, Sam McCracken, general manager of Nike N7, said in a release, give each school the "opportunity to celebrate and support their local tribal communities, to which each program has a distinct, unique connection."

The N7 uniforms feature the color turquoise, the color of friendship in Native culture, according to Nike.

According to a release, MCC's women's team just this season alone signed five players who represent tribal nations across the United States.

The Thunderbirds are joined on the list of programs donning the uniforms by some of the biggest university's in the country, including Gonzaga University, Oklahoma State University, Florida State University, San Diego State University and Stanford University.

The Thunderbird N7 uniforms will be unveiled on Dec.1 as MCC plays Phoenix College during the college's sixth annual American Indian Recognition Day basketball games.

The games highlight the "college’s commitment to Native American recruitment and education through sports," a release said.

Tip-off for those games is at 2 p.m. for the women’s team and 4 p.m. for the men's team.
