SURPRISE, Ariz., -- A man is dead and an officer injured in an officer-involved shooting overnight in Surprise.

Surprise police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the area of 177th Avenue and Voltaire Street around 1 a.m. Saturday.

As the responding officer made contact with a man inside the car, an altercation ensued and resulted in the officer firing his weapon at least one time.

The man inside the car drove for a short distance before colliding with a parked vehicle.

Officers started life-saving measures on the man and called for the fire department, however shortly after, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Derek Adame of Surprise.

The officer involved was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and released.

The investigation is ongoing.
