SURPRISE, Ariz. - A school resource officer in Surprise is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
According to police records, Surprise police officer Robert Gabrych began his relationship with a student in 2009 when she was 17-years-old.
According to a bulletin from the City of Surprise, Gabrych was the SRO at Willow Canyon High School at the time.
Documents say the two dated for several years. The allegations came to light in September of 2017 because a former teacher who was also dating Gabrych found out abut his relationship with the student. She felt "sick and emotional on how wrong that was" so she reported it to police.
Documents say the teacher told police that Gabrych and the student would meet prior to school to engage in sexual intercourse and that the victim and Gabrych would oftentimes leave campus to go to the student's house. Gabrych would later return to campus and get back to work.
The former teacher told police the two would communicate through the game "Words With Friends" so there was no evidence.
In a police interview, the victim admitted she would meet Gabrych at the Surprise Police Department to engage in sexual activity.
Gabrych told investigators he had reservations about the relationship because of the student's age, saying she was younger than one of his kids. Despite that, documents reveal he continued seeing her. He said they were in love.
Gabrych stepped down from the Surprise Police Department in February. He faces a slew of charges. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.
