Police: Vandal arrested after damaging 100-year-old relics at Phoenix church

The man also assaulted a church employee who attempted to stop him from damaging the relics, police said.

A man was arrested after he damaged relics at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Basilica in Phoenix, according to police.

Phoenix police said 35-year-old Devon Thomas entered the church on Saturday and started behaving disruptively and damaged more than one church relic said to be over 100 years old.

According to police, a church employee attempted to stop Thomas, but was hit by Thomas several times before others were able to restrain him.

According to church officials, Thomas damaged a crucifix and two angel statues. 

Thomas was booked for aggravated criminal damage and misdemeanor assault, police said.
