Phoenix residents have fewer days to legally light fireworks this year. Here's why.

The city law permits the use of fireworks from June 24 to July 6-- which is a shorter time frame than previous years.

PHOENIX- From cone fountains to ground spinners, starting June 24 you can legally start shooting off fireworks just in time for the Fourth of July.

This year, the law permits the use of fireworks from June 24 to July 6-- which is a shorter time frame than previous years.

“They’re fun great to watch, but they’re a fire danger,” Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade said.

McDade said this year’s statewide drought is not be taken lightly and shortening the time for fireworks allows the fire department to focus its resources just in case a celebration turns into a fire.

Additionally, the Phoenix Fire Department overstaffs during firework season and firefighters work overtime.

"We have these laws in place not to be party poopers but to protect everybody,” McDade said.
