Phoenix ranch owner says dogs and barn cats shot with pellet gun, one fatally

In all, Roberts says six to 10 barns cats and dogs have been shot. A shocking scenario for a ranch that is traditionally a happy place.

PHOENIX - Multiple dogs and barn cats on “Roberts Under The Son Ranch” in Phoenix have been shot with a pellet gun, one fatally, according to the ranch’s owner, Amy Roberts.

She told 12 News that the family’s way of life has changed as the perpetrator remains at large.

“It would help if we had answers,” Roberts said.

Her barn cats were allegedly first shot with a pellet gun about six months ago. According to Roberts, one was shot in the leg, others in the ear and one lost an eye.

Roberts explained the cats are vital to the farm’s ecosystem, warding off scorpions and other rodents.

“We really like our barn cats. They are part of our ranch family,” Roberts said.

Dogs too have allegedly fallen victim, including one fatally.

“We had to put her down that day," Roberts said. "There was no question.”

In all, Roberts says six to 10 barns cats and dogs have been shot. A shocking scenario for a ranch that is traditionally a happy place, home to goats and horses, and regularly visited by children for riding lessons. But now — with no suspect in custody — the family is concerned about what may be to come.

“I’m hesitant to let my son go outside without somebody else with him, because you just don’t know when it [is] going to change. When is it going to go from cats to dogs to, God forbid, people?”

Roberts says police were contacted and have come to the ranch on two separate occasions. But there are no concrete leads as far as she knows. Whoever is responsible, Roberts says needs help and more.

“We believe in forgiveness. As hard as it is sometimes,” Roberts said.

Phoenix police say they are investigating.
