Phoenix police search for driver they say hit and killed toddler and grandma

The search continued Saturday night, for a driver police said hit a three-year-old and his grandmother, leaving them to die on a South Phoenix street.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The search continued Saturday night, for a driver police said hit a three-year-old and his grandmother, leaving them to die on a South Phoenix street.

Phoenix Police said Wanda and little Enoch Trujillo lost their lives in Friday night’s hit-and-run on 16th Street.

Gaspar Lopez who lives right where it all happened said he was taking in some fresh air Friday night, when saw the unimaginable happen and unfortunately, it wasn’t the first time.

A single flame honored a three-year-old and his grandmother Saturday. Lopez said he didn’t know Wanda and little Enoch Trujillo, but lightning a candle in their honor was tradition.

Lopez saw the two crossing 16th Street Friday between E. Marguerite and E. Wier Avenues. There is not a crosswalk in that area.

“When they passed the yellow line, the little boy fell, when she gets down to pick him up, as she gets up, that’s when the car hits them,” Lopez told 12 News, adding, “and a second car ran them both over again.”

Lopez showed 12 News where he said Enoch’s body landed. The little boy’s grandma, ended up not too far ahead.

Phoenix Police said Wanda Trujillo died on scene; her grandson was transferred to the hospital, but he didn’t make.

Investigators said the driver took off.

The search began for a dark-colored, older model SUV, possibly with damage to the front.

Lopez said speeding cars and low lighting in the area were ongoing problems, keeping his altar growing.

His candle in memory of Enoch and the little boy’s grandmother were an addition to what Lopez started three years back, when he said a neighbor was also hit and killed crossing here.
