Newborn boy in critical condition after mother shot and killed, police say

Police identified the pregnant woman who died as 29-year-old Chelsee Dennis.

Phoenix police have identified the pregnant woman who was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in north Phoenix.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chelsee Dennis was found slumped over the wheel of her vehicle just before 2 p.m. near 7th Street and Northern, according to police.

Her baby boy was delivered at the hospital. As of Wednesday morning, police said the newborn was unstable and in critical condition. The baby was delivered by emergency c-section on Tuesday night.

A five-year-old child in the back seat of the car was uninjured in the incident, police say.

Dennis' boyfriend fled the scene, but was later found and arrested for homicide, according to police. He has been identified as 36-year-old Dwight A. Miles.

Police also recovered a handgun when they took Miles into custody.

A probable cause document said the girl in the backseat told police the adults were fighting before shots were fired.
