Mourners line Phoenix streets to say goodbye to the beloved senator

"I think he's a very special man, really honest and I don't think there will be another one like him."

PHOENIX — It was an emotional day for friends, family and a community filled with well-wishers who watched as Senator John McCain’s body was brought to North Phoenix Baptist Church.

People from all parties and places around the Valley were out along the route to make sure the Maverick knew he was extremely loved and will be deeply missed.

“I'm still shaking, and you know it's been tough, it's been a tough few days,” Girja Pande said.

Pande has lived in Arizona for more than 30 years and was among loved ones, friends and strangers who stood along the route to North Phoenix Baptist Church to say their final goodbyes to the beloved Senator.

“John McCain to me was a very realistic person, he lived a life that was quite extraordinary,” Pande said.

He shares similar sentiments with Virginia Lopez, as the entire state rides an emotional roller coaster.

“To be honest with you, I cried watching the TV because I was not expecting that to happen so fast from one day to the next,” she said.

As days pass the process of mourning hasn’t gotten easier for anyone who knew of the man who sacrificed so much for this country.

“I'm a big fan, you know and I'm a realistic person I enjoyed his life, I want to respect his life,” Pande added.

Flags were flown, and flowers laid to lend a respectful and grateful goodbye to Senator McCain.

“I think he's a very special man, really honest and I don't think there will be another one like him,” Lopez said.
