Meet a family who benefits from the Summer of a Million Meals

The Merrings find hope and healthy food through the food bank.

The Summer of a Million Meals campaign continues as we try to feed hungry families in the Valley all season long. We want to introduce you to a family that heavily relies on the United Food Bank as a primary resource to feed their loved ones.

Cathryn Merring is a big fan of the United Food Bank.

“This came from the food bank the other day, we love that,” she said.

Cathryn and her husband Peter also love their two grandsons, who unexpectedly moved in with them about 10 years ago.

“We didn't expect it, because he's my second marriage. My kids were all grown up -- I thought we were going to have you know, this is it,” she added.

And soon enough, they realized raising their grandsons on part-time salaries, was going to be a challenge.

“Like I said, we don't go out much. I do a lot of cooking,” she said.

Cathryn sat down and crunched the numbers for us. Her monthly food budget of $650, minus her food bank savings of a $160 per month.

“That leaves us with $490 -- that's a significant savings, she said. "All the food there is fresh, and I was very impressed with that part. This is a really good place. I don't even make my list 'til I get done with the food bank.”

At little to no expense, the Merrings are feeling blessed and hopeful that more families in need will find their way to United Food Bank.

“Be a good steward of it, enjoy it, use it well. Spread the word,” Merring said.
