Medical examiner: Jesse Wilson's cause of death 'undetermined'

The Buckeye Police Department has identified no suspects and made no arrests in the case.

BUCKEYE, Ariz. - The Maricopa County Medical Examiner has released its findings in the death of Jesse Wilson, whose remains were found in Buckeye in March.

The 10-year-old boy was reported missing in July 2016.

The report says Wilson's cause and manner of death are both "undetermined."

The remains -- mostly bones, including a partial skull and an accompanying shirt -- were linked to Wilson using DNA testing. The bones, found by a Buckeye employee near Highway 85 and Broadway Road, were weathered from exposure and sun-bleached.

Rebecca Hsu, a forensic pathologist, tells 12 News the toxicology report in the autopsy caught her eye. The report indicates he had two antihistamines in his system: hydroxyzine and norchlorcyclizine.

"It might just be that the person had some allergies. But antihistamines sometimes, especially in children, can actually be used for a sedative," explained Hsu. "Neither one of them, as far as I know, is commonly prescribed for a child."

The report could not determine a very specific time of death: It estimated Wilson died between eight months and three years before the bones were recovered.

When asked how challenging it is to determine a cause or manner of death in a case like this, Hsu said, "It's not impossible if you have enough injury, but it can be extremely difficult because there's a lot you don't have."

The report indicates several broken bones, but it is hard to know if those injuries happened before or after Jesse's death.

"Is the fracture that you see because an animal was chewing on it or is it because someone struck them? That becomes the challenge," said Hsu.

The extensive report sheds new light on the tragic case but leaves many unanswered questions.

"There's probably not a lot more short of someone coming forward bringing forth new information that's really going to help," Hsu said.

The Buckeye Police Department said in March that it had been communicating with Wilson's mother, Crystal, in the wake of his death.

Police haven't identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case, but sources inside Buckeye PD said in May that they were nearing the end of their investigation.
