Man dies after suffering medical event in Phoenix police custody

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

PHOENIX — A man is dead after showing signs of medical distress while in the custody of Phoenix police.

Police said they responded to a domestic violence call near Thomas Road and 67th Avenue in west Phoenix early Wednesday morning.

While officers were there, they developed probable cause to arrest 35-year-old Ira Howard, police said.

Police took him into custody at a precinct on West Encanto Boulevard, where Howard later exhibited signs of medical distress.

Firefighters responded and took Howard to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police said no force was used on the part of the officers.

The cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.
