PHOENIX - One man is dead and southbound Interstate 17 was closed near the Interstate 10 interchange while police investigated an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning.

Phoenix police tell 12 News two men committed a home invasion at about 1:30 a.m. at a house near 64th Avenue and Avalon Drive.

One of the suspects was taken into custody along with three people inside the home on drug-related charges. One got away in a vehicle and police pursued him.

Police followed the man to another house near Broadway Road and 7th Avenue.

According to police, the suspect exited the vehicle and entered the home. Officers surrounded the house and placed spike strips behind the tires of parked vehicles -- but the man took off in a white SUV and the spikes damaged the tires.

The runaway driver made his way onto I-17 with the Phoenix police helicopter now in pursuit.

He was approaching the transition ramp onto westbound I-10 when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

Police say the man got out of the SUV and ran up an embankment to I-17.

Two officers and a sergeant followed him, and according to police, the suspect pulled a handgun. He was shot and killed by the sergeant.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The freeway closure lasted through the morning commute and into the afternoon.
