Phoenix PD: 17-year-old killed in shootout with officers

The shooting marks the 21st officer-involved shooting in Valley in 2019 and the eighth for Phoenix police.

A 17-year-old teen died after he was shot by police early Sunday morning.

Police identified the teen as Robert Rabago Monday.

According to Phoenix police, a sergeant saw Rabago with a group of juveniles walking with beer near 16th and Portland streets. One person in the group threw a beer bottle at a passing vehicle, police said.

Police said the driver of that vehicle stopped and told an officer that one person in the group was armed with a handgun. The group scattered as police attempted to make contact with them.

According to Phoenix PD, officers found part of the group after three of them exited a yard where they were hiding. Police said Rabago then fired shots at officers.

Rabago fled to a nearby apartment complex and continued to exchange gunfire with officers, police said. At some point during the exchange of gunfire Rabago was hit.

According to police, Rabago made it to 16th Street at the Interstate 10 exit ramp where he attempted to open the doors of waiting vehicles before collapsing in the road. Police said a firearm was found on Rabago, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the ordeal.

Another juvenile in the group was taken into custody with the help of a stun gun and police K-9, police said. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Two others in the group were also detained and a second firearm was found at the scene, according to police.

It is the 21st officer-involved shooting in Valley this year. It's the eighth for Phoenix police in 2019.
