In a struggle for a pistol, man at Buckeye event shot, killed, MCSO says

After a fight escalated at a private fundraising event in Buckeye, a struggle for a gun left the instigator dead and another shot, Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputies said.

A fight at a Buckeye event left one person dead and another injured Saturday night.

At a private fundraiser in Buckeye, a fight broke out and escalated. Jose Vera, 40, pointed a pistol at another man, according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department.

A third man, Telesforo Rios, 40, stepped into the fight, trying to stop Vera. Rios was shot, and his injuries were non-life-threatening.

In the struggle for the gun, Vera was also shot. He died from his injuries.

Rios was taken to the hospital. After being interviewed by MCSO detectives, Rios was released.

The event was held at a home in western Buckeye.

No arrests have been made in the incident, and detectives are still following up on the case.
