Police say a husband and wife were killed when Ford Mustang crashed into them at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Country Club Way.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Officials say an elderly couple is dead and another person is injured in a crash in Tempe Thursday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Country Club Way just before 8 a.m.

Police say a black Ford Mustang was speeding to beat a traffic light as it was changing and crashed into a maroon sedan.

According to the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, the two people in the maroon sedan were husband and wife. The woman died on the scene and the man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Mustang was a man in his 20s. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials say.

Authorities have closed the intersection where the crash happened. Eastbound Southern Avenue is also closed at Los Feliz Drive. Westbound Southern Avenue is closed at Price Road.

Officials say these closures will be in place for several hours.

Investigators don't believe impairment is a factor in the crash but police say the driver could face criminal charges for speeding and possibly even manslaughter.
