PHOENIX - First Place AZ, a nonprofit that provides house options for adults with autism and other special abilities, broke ground on a new facility on Tuesday.
First Place-Phoenix will include 56 apartments, a transition academy, and a leadership institute. It's located at 3rd Street and Catalina in Phoenix.
According to First Place AZ founder Denise D. Resnik, 80 partners from around North America came together to make First Place-Phoenix a reality.
"Together, we have created a culture that recognizes ability and opened more doors to continuing education, employment and health care. And together, we have set the stage for this very big next step, breaking new ground in Phoenix and for adults like our son, everywhere," Resnik said.
Apartment units will be offered for lease, and include studios, one, two and four bedrooms.
As far as services on site, the academy will offer a two-year, tuition-based training program for residents that teaches independent living skills, career readiness and interpersonal relationship skills.
And the leadership institute will serve as a training center for professionals, service providers and medical personal, as well as a research location.
Residents should be able to move into the residence in 2018.
Interested residents or participants in the First Place Transition Academy may apply online.
