Firefighter's death at National Guard base an accident, medical examiner says

Doherty was found dead in his quarters at the National Guard base in July.

PHOENIX - Juston Doherty was found dead in his quarters while on duty at the Arizona Army National Guard base in July.

Just over two months later, the medical examiner's office has ruled Doherty's death an accident, saying he had multiple prescription medications in his system combined with alcohol.

This is what the report said:

"Based on the above findings, reported circumstances of death, and all other investigative information received to date and as available to me, it is my opinion that the cause of death is acute intoxication by combined effects of diazepam, ethanol, fentanyl, oxycodone. The manner of death is classified as ACCIDENT."

Doherty, who was 46 years old, was a reservist in addition to being a full-time firefighter.

Doherty was a decorated aaptain in the US Army, an Army Ranger and an Airborne School graduate. In the Army, he served two deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

The husband, father and decorated soldier and firefighter was laid to rest in the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix two months ago.
