Police arrest 2 suspects after fiery standoff in north Phoenix

One of the suspect, Phoenix police said, was taken to a hospital after an encounter with a police K9.

PHOENIX - Police have arrested ​two armed robbery suspects who barricaded themselves inside a north Phoenix house Sunday afternoon.

Police said 37-year-old Kenny Keyes was taken into custody and booked for an outstanding felony arrest warrant and shoplifting.

Police have not released the name of the other suspect, a 26-year-old man. He was injured during an encounter with a police K9 and taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Officers began negotiating with the two suspects, who refused to surrender peacefully at a home near 23rd Avenue and Cactus Road, Sunday afternoon.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, Keyes and the other man allegedly robbed a business near Grand Avenue and Indian School Road on Sunday around 11:30 a.m. When a victim tried to stop them, one of the men pointed a gun.

The two suspects took off in a car. The car's information led police to the house near 23rd Avenue and Cactus Road, where Keyes and the other man barricaded themselves inside.

Police said negotiations with the men began and after several hours a woman exited the residence and was taken into custody.

According to the police, the two suspects ignored their commands, so officers deployed gas into the house.

One of the suspects inside the home fired shots at officers, police said. Officers returned fire with suppressive shots at the residence.

A 12 News photographer at the scene said shots were fired around 4 p.m. Police confirmed that the suspects had fired at officers.

According to police, Keyes exited the house after the exchange of gunfire. The other man refused to surrender to police.

Police deployed more gas and the suspect finally exited the home. The man was taken into custody with assistance of a K9 officer, police said.

According to the police, the suspect had rifle magazines and ammunition in his possession. He claimed there was an additional suspect still hiding in the home with additional weapons and ammunition.

Police said negotiations resumed for a possible third suspect. but there was no response. More "gas and diversionary devices" were deployed into the house while officers fired more suppressive shots.

The house caught fire. Around 8:30 p.m., a large plume of black smoke and flames were produced from the home. Officers extinguished the fire, police said.

An additional suspect was never found inside the home and no officers were injured.

According to the police, the injured suspect later said there was never a third suspect in the home. His identification is pending a booking process.

The investigation is ongoing.
