PHOENIX - A Valley family is in shock after a 29-year-old mother stands accused of stabbing her three boys -- aged 8, 5 and 2 months -- to death and then dismembering them before stabbing herself.
Phoenix Police released the names of the three boys stabbed to death overnight Wednesday at their home near Interstate 17 and Bell Road. They are 8-year-old Jaikare Rahaman, 5-year-old Jeremiah Adams and 2-month-old Avery Robinson.
Police believe their 29-year-old mother killed them and stabbed herself. Though police have not released the woman's identity, she was identified by a family member as Octavia Rogers.
Rogers' family says they never saw it coming.
“I am still just stunned at the information, I don't know,” said Rogers’ sister who identified herself only as Vonticia, when she spoke with 12 News over the phone. "[There was] Nothing; no signs."
Vonticia says the family is trying to reconcile the loving mother they knew, with the woman police say committed this horrific crime.
“She was a loving mother. She loves her kids,” Vonticia said. “She did whatever she needed to make sure they didn't ever want for anything.”
Officers found the boys' bodies in a closet with multiple stab wounds.
Rogers' brother arrived at the home around 11: 30 p.m. Wednesday and Rogers met him in the garage, speaking incoherently.
She locked him out of the house and stabbed herself several times, according to police. He forced his way in and found her in their mother's bathroom with multiple stab wounds and called police.
Police responded to the scene and were told Rogers had children. They found the boys' bodies in a closet in the home.
"It appears at this point that the children were likely stabbed to death and that parts of their bodies were dismembered," Phoenix Police Department Sergeant Trent Crump said.
“It didn't seem like the baby was stressing her out or anything, you know,” Rogers’ sister said. "She didn't have none of that at all, this is just like a big shock to the family.”
They can't understand how -- or why -- this seemingly loving mother would take her boys away from them.
“They were happy, [she] always made sure there was a smile on their face,” Vonticia said, “she loved her boys with all her heart.”
The family member who identified Rogers also identified the children.
Rogers may have also been pregnant with another child, and she stabbed herself in the abdomen.
“I never could have imagined that she could do something like this," neighbor Frank Segura said.
Segura said he's friendly with some of the family members in the house. He remembered the kids playing in his front lawn.
"[They were] playful," he said. "Always joking around, doing kids' stuff out in the front, riding their bikes.”
Rogers is in a nearby hospital in critical condition.
