'Everything is just destroyed!': Woman goes home after Phoenix carjacking suspect arrested inside

"This guy just ruined everything, treated it like trash, and my parents have treasured that home for 43 years," said Katie Ruben about her childhood home.

PHOENIX - Some things can't be replaced. Katie Ruben is coming back to her childhood home for the first time a carjacking suspect was arrested while trying to hide from police inside.

"This guy just ruined everything, treated it like trash, and my parents have treasured that home for 43 years," Ruben said.

The Phoenix home was the random target of opportunity for this suspect after ditching a stolen vehicle in a nearby front yard.

Police say 27-year-old Jairo Contreras Quintero fell through the ceiling after hiding in the attic. Quintero allegedly also played a role in the death of a police K9 later found in a living room cabinet.

"It just changes your whole view on life. It really does, that there are such horrible people out here," Ruben said.

Her parents live alone in the house these days and hope to move back in soon, but there's a lot of work to do before that can happen.

"Everything is just destroyed. There's glass everywhere. It's just a shame," Ruben said. Her 70-year-old father, who has Parkinson's disease, just wants to get back to his normal routine.

"Last night, he was having a really hard time and said to my mom, 'I just want to go home,' This is just where he feels comfortable," Ruben said.

A spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department says it is likely the damages will be paid for by either the homeowner's insurance policy or by the City of Phoenix.

The family is currently working through it's options in that regard, but is also seeing great generosity from friends on a GoFundMe page. This is a link to help donate.
