DPS: Woman dead after being stabbed following crash on Loop 101 in Peoria

According to DPS, immediately after the car crash occurred a man got out of the car and starting stabbing the woman.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Public safety says a woman is dead after she was stabbed by a man following a crash on Loop 101 in Peoria early Friday morning.

DPS said a white Lexus traveled off the freeway, through the dry canal embankment and collided with the right-of-way fence. The crash occurred just before the Thunderbird Road off-ramp on northbound Loop 101.

According to DPS, immediately after the car crash, there was an altercation between a man, who's in his early 20s, and a woman inside the vehicle. During the fight, DPS said the man started stabbing the woman.

Kameron Lee, spokesman for DPS, said when Peoria police arrived on scene it was "quite chaotic."

Lee said Peoria police, with the help of bystanders who had stopped to assist, were able to take the man into custody. The man and woman were taken to separate hospitals. The woman later died at the hospital, DPS said.

The man has minor injuries, but it's not known how he sustained those injuries. Lee said he could assume the man was injured in the crash "just from looking at the damaged vehicle."

Lee said there was a reported shooting related to the incident, which is still being investigated. Lee said there were no bullet casings on the freeway.

DPS tweeted earlier Friday that it was investigating the incident as a homicide and the freeway would remain closed "for most of the day."

Loop 101 was closed northbound at Peoria Avenue through the morning. It reopened shortly before 4 p.m.

The investigation will be a "long and drawn out process," Lee said.
