PHOENIX — A popular eatery and gathering place in downtown Phoenix announced it is shuttering with no warning other than a sign on the door.

The closure of DeSoto Central Market, located at Roosevelt Street and Central Avenue, is permanent and effective immediately.

The sign posted on the glass door Monday morning read:

To all of our loyal customers,

We sincerely apologize but the DeSoto concept will be closing effective immediately Monday, August 20th, 2018. Over the years we have helped incubate restaurants beyond the walls of DeSoto as part of its mission and also be creative in hosting various events to bring the community together.

We appreciate all our customers and the community for supporting us over the years.

Don’t worry the building will remain and plans for the use of the space are in the works.

Thank you,

DeSoto Central Market

Up until Monday morning, there were no signs that DeSoto was closing. In fact, Sunday morning the market was giving away a DeSoto gift card on its Facebook page.

DeSoto, known for its events and diverse food-court style dining, housed several different vendors in its space. The market opened in 2015.

The sign posted Monday says there are plans in the works to use the space and that the historic 1928 building will remain. It did not address what would happen to the market's vendors.

Adobo Dragon, an Asian-Latino kitchen inside the market, announced on its website that it will be relocating.
