Couple tied to child death at unlicensed daycare receive maximum sentence

Both will have lifetime supervised probation upon release.

PHOENIX - The man and woman who pleaded guilty after being charged in connection to the death of 2-year-old Savannah Cross at an unlicensed day care received the maximum sentence in prison Friday.

"We are pleased the maximum sentence was delivered and savannah got her justice," Cathy Cross, Savannah's grandmother, said. "Today was Savannah's day. It was about the justice that was delivered and we are grateful."

During sentencing Friday afternoon, the family told the court stories about the giggly little girl with a big smile and a gentle side. At times, her father and grandmother broke down as they shared memories of Savannah.

“I can’t ever hear that laugh again. I can’t dance with my daughter at her wedding,” said Cross.

Cathy Cross says this murder has been devastating to her and her son.

“The impact is irreversible -- my life has been changed forever, my son is scarred forever,” said Cross.

Allison Clement was sentenced to 24 years while Ryan Reed was sentenced to 35.

Her father, Stephen Cross, was happy with the sentencing and said now the family can move on and carry on with their lives.

"I'm very happy with what happened and Savannah's definitely been a big part of this," he said.

Savannah Cross died in December of 2012.

Clement previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and three counts of attempted child abuse.

Reed pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted sexual conduct with a minor, child abuse, and attempted child abuse.

He will have to register as a sex offender.

Both will have lifetime supervised probation upon release.

"Savannah was sitting on my shoulder the entire time I was in there (court)," Cathy Cross said. "She's been driving this quest for justice.

“Everything I've said for the last three years, ten months and ten days about this case was all being said for Savannah with her on my shoulder."
