Brophy Prep: Pending sex abuse report will be released

A Nov. 13 open letter from Brophy President Adria Renke states, “I write today with a heavy heart to inform you of an impending announcement by Jesuits West Province.”

The president of Brophy College Preparatory has notified the school’s community of an upcoming report about credible allegations of sexual abuse against minors.

A Nov. 13 open letter from Brophy President Adria Renke states, “I write today with a heavy heart to inform you of an impending announcement by Jesuits West Province.”

The Jesuits West Province, a worldwide organization of Catholic priests and other male church members, has been conducting an investigation and will release names of all Jesuit priests under jurisdiction of the Province who have been “found to have credible allegations of sexual abuse against minors since 1950,” the letter states.

All Jesuit priests at Brophy are assigned through Jesuits West.

“At this time we do not have the names of the priests in question, including whether any of them may have served at Brophy in past decades,” Renke wrote.

Renke states in the letter that any new revelations about priests who have served at Brophy will be publicized by the school. Jesuits West is expected to disclose the report on Friday, Dec. 7.

“If at that time we determine any member of Brophy’s clergy or clergy faculty has been found to be associated with a past, credible allegation, we will move swiftly to cooperate with the investigation… and ensure offenders are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Renke wrote.

The Jesuits West is described by the organization as a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers founded in 1540.  The organization is made up of 17,000 priests and brothers worldwide and is the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church.

“We are pastors, teachers and chaplains. We are also doctors, lawyers, and astronomers, among many other roles in Church and society,” the organization’s website states.

Joe Dana will have the full report on 12 News at 5.
