19-year-old who hit man with car outside Surprise Walmart facing 2nd-degree murder

Chet Becker Jr. tried to flee the scene after hitting Zeldin, according to police, and was initially booked aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The 19-year-old driver who police said intentionally hit another man outside a Surprise Walmart with his car had a new charged submitted against him Monday: second-degree murder.

Surprise police said the pedestrian hit by Chet Becker Jr. hit, 26-year-old Samuel Zeldin, was taken to a hospital after the incident and died Monday.

According to Surprise police, Becker Jr. told police he "intentionally" hit Zeldin because "he was mad at him." The two had been in an argument over a girlfriend, police said.

Becker Jr. tried to flee the scene after hitting Zeldin, according to police, and was initially booked on aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury.

An additional charge of second-degree murder was submitted by investigators on Monday, police said.
