Rideshare for kids coming to the Phoenix area

The CareDrivers are put through a strenuous safety and security screening process, fingerprinting, FBI and Department of Justice background checks, the company says.

HopSkipDrive is a rideshare company that's been around since 2014, but it's launching in Phoenix this week and it's specifically for kids.

Some parents are skeptical about the service, like Amanda Varney and Mark Manno, who say it's not for their family.

"I just wouldn't feel comfortable putting my kids in cars with strangers," Varney said.

For like-minded parents, the company says, if you're in doubt, don't worry. The CareDrivers are put through a strenuous safety and security screening process. We're talking fingerprinting, FBI and Department of Justice background checks. Plus, five years experience in caregiving is required.

Just those steps sold Otto and Sonja Reichel. They tell 12 News if the driver checks out, it'd be a great option.

"If it's approved, if we know the driver is validated and maybe if we get to know another parent who has gone through the service we would," they said.

The screening for HopSkipDrive employees doesn't stop there. There's driving record checks through the MVD, plus, an in-person meeting with the HSD team. Even parents who would opt to stay away from the service understand scenarios where it would be helpful.

"I guess school pick-up and drop-off, I mean sometimes if he's at work or if I'm running late at work, it can be an issue," Varney said.

Which is why the company partners with more than 150 schools and districts to dial back the stress for parents and get kids from A to B safely.

"We've known about the service in San Francisco and know parents who approve it," Sonja said.

Company reps say for $17, families can order rides, even chip in on a carpool for multiple kids headed to the same place.
