What you need to know about Arizona's 'stupid motorist law'

The "stupid motorist law" is not chargeable, a motorist must commit at least one other violation to get a fine.

You've probably heard the saying, "Turn around, don't drown!" But did you know there's a law for that?

Arizona has a "stupid motorist law," also know as ARS 28-910.

The law states anyone who enters a public street or highway that is barricaded because of flooding is liable for the expenses of any emergency response required to remove the car, driver or any passengers.

The law says the charge can not exceed $2,000 for a single incident.

Keep in mind an insurance policy may not include that type of charge.

The "stupid motorist law" is not chargeable, a motorist must commit at least one other violation to get the fine. This is why only a handful of cases have actually been prosecuted even though the law went into effect about 22 years ago.
