Flooding on Tohono O'odham Nation causing evacuations

SELLS, Ariz. – Hurricane Rosa has produced high levels of flooding on the southwest side of the Tohono O’odham Nation near Menagers Dam.

Officials say floodwaters have restricted road access to the community and air access has been limited due to the bad weather conditions.

Officials say they are uncertain over the integrity of the dam, and so they are urging Menagers Dam residents to move as far to the north end of the community as possible.

Community members are asked to avoid the area for at least the next 24 hours.

The Nation’s Office of Emergency Management is working to evacuate residents as well as coordinating with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Pima County Swift Water Rescue teams for assistance.

Officials say Tohono O’odham Nation emergency services are evacuating more than 30 members of the Nation’s Kohatk Village in Pinal County.

They say the water in the adjacent wash is running extremely high and continues to overflow – flooding the community.
