Ducey says some charter school issues are 'concerning,' suggests reform

For the first time, Ducey says he is working to make changes.

Arizona's governor says charter school reforms may be needed after "concerning" issues of accountability.

Governor Doug Ducey and Republicans in Arizona have blocked attempts by Democrats in recent years to make charter schools more accountable with public dollars. For the first time, Ducey says he is working with lawmakers to make changes.

Ducey faced pressure from the Red for Ed movement, teachers and some Republicans to make changes after recent findings. Watchdog groups and the Arizona Republic investigations show charter owners becoming millionaires off non-compete contracts and self dealing.

"Some of the things I have been reading are concerning me," Ducey said at a recent event. "We're talking about some reforms that we can put forward to close some of these gaps."

Some Democrats criticize Ducey for not budging on the issue until the public outcry in an election year has become too much to ignore.

Any new legislation wouldn't happen until the next session.
