Brush fire closes I-17 in both directions north of Sunset Point

The fire, called the Badger Springs Fire, is estimated at more than 1,000 acres, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

A brush fire burning around 1,000 acres near Interstate 17 has closed the highway in both directions north of Sunset Point Friday evening.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety was able to get everyone turned around and off the road except for larger commercial vehicles. DPS expects the southbound lanes to open before 11 p.m.

There is still no estimated reopening time for the northbound lanes.

The fire is moving northeast, firefighters say. There are no current threats to communities.

The closest communities are Cordes Lakes 6 miles north and Black Canyon City 8 miles south.

The Bureau of Land Management Arizona said this fire, called the Badger Springs Fire, is estimated at more than 1,000 acres. Three crews, five fire engines and three airtankers, including a DC-10, have been assigned to the fire.

Firefighters will be working late into the evening to burn off grass and brush to slow the fire's progress.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
