Arizona woman fell asleep in Spain, woke up paralyzed by rare disorder

Kara Dunn's family said she was in Spain on vacation, felt ill, went to sleep and woke up paralyzed. Her family asking for help to get her back home.

TUCSON, Ariz. – A University of Arizona student who just finished her sophomore year is paralyzed in Spain and her family needs help getting her back to the states.

Kara Dunn’s family said she was there on vacation, felt ill, went to sleep and woke up paralyzed.

“After she was rushed to the hospital,” her brother Ryan said on a GoFundMe page, “the doctors told her she had contracted a rare autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome.”

The harmful disorder battles the nervous system.

“All we want is for Kara to be able to come home and get the best treatment available so she can regain her strength,” Ryan said. “However, the only way this is possible is if she is air evacuated to Arizona. The cost of the emergency flight back to the United States, general medical expenses, physical therapy and transportation/housing for our family is over $100,000. This is why I am seeking your support.”

Kara's family is currently in Spain and met their previous goal of $50,000 on their GoFundMe page. They are now asking for $150,000.

"Every day is another step toward recovery," the family said in a Wednesday update on the GoFundMe page. "Kara is still not able to move her legs or sit up in bed, but she is stabilizing and will hopefully be able to board a medical flight in a few days so she can get home and start rehab as soon as possible."
