Arizona braces for what could be the biggest winter storm of the season

Weather officials say they're expecting the greatest snowfall totals for northern Arizona in two years.

PHOENIX — After starting the week with snow and rain, another stronger, more significant winter storm is expected to hit Arizona starting Thursday.

Weather officials say Thursday's storm is expected to be the biggest winter storm of the season so far.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff says the incoming snow will be on top of the snow that's already in place from Monday's storm, which measured nearly a foot in Flagstaff and even more than that in other places around northern Arizona.

What can northern Arizona expect from Thursday's storm?

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff said Monday the greatest snowfall totals since January 2017 are expected to come with this storm.

NWS Flagstaff tweeted Monday that those who have scheduled travel plans for later in the week should "begin to consider alternatives."

Travel, according to NWS Flagstaff, could even be impossible at times.

Weather officials say snow could be measured in feet in several locations and snow levels will be around 3,000 to 4,500 feet during the heaviest times.

Those snow levels could drop even lower overnight into Friday, NWS Flagstaff says.

Potential snowfall amounts provided by NWS Flagstaff show Payson could receive nearly three feet of snow while Flagstaff, Williams and Prescott could receive around two feet.

According to NWS Flagstaff, snow showers will start to weaken as they move east Friday afternoon and evening.

Will this winter storm bring rain to Phoenix?

Rain is expected to enter the Phoenix area early Thursday morning and last through Friday with showers being heavy at times.

The National Weather Service says rainfall totals could top the one-inch mark in many locations around the Valley.

The most rain is expected to fall north and east of Phoenix, according to NWS.

What can southern Arizona expect?

NWS Tucson says the mountain areas of southeastern Arizona are under a winter storm watch Thursday morning until Friday evening at 5 p.m.

Heavy snow is expected with this storm with areas between 5,500 and 7,000 feet expected to receive more than a foot of snow.

Some areas above 7,000 feet are expected to receive around two feet of snow.
