50 percent of these dresses are made from shade screens and it's way 'cool'

An outfit that's ready for you to wear in the summer.

It's a "very" unique way to dress for summer.

Mesa Community College's Fashion Merchandising and Design students created outfits using 50 percent or more of shade screens.

"So, we asked the Mesa Community College fashion students to turn these [shade screens] into amazing creations," said Kathleen Mascarenas with SRP Public & Relations.

With scorch temperatures slowly peeking into the Valley, SRP presented a unique vision to MCC fashion students.

"We wanted to find a fun, creative way to let people know about shade screens for their windows of their home," said Mascarenas.

Mascarenas says 50 percent of the heat that comes into your home, comes in through your windows.

The MCC fashion students were all in to create outfits made from shade screens.

"The first thing I thought as, that's crazy," said Ashish Savchand a MCC fashion student. "The second thing was that this was going to push us beyond our limits and have us think more creatively," said Savchand.

He says the that the shade screen material was so thick, he had to hand sew each little detail on the dress he designed.

"I have a couple of bruises on my fingers and I have scratch marks and everything," said Savchand.

Savchand says that one of the biggest struggles in creating his dress was working with the stiffness of the material to create certain shapes for the dress.

"I took an actual hula hoop and I tied that into the bottom of the circle skirt, so it [gives it the ability] to stick and fray out," said Savchand.

Savchand says the "cool" thing about the dress is that his model actually felt cool while standing outside in the scorch heat with the dress on.

"She didn't feel hot at all and that's probably because of all the shade sheet material blocking all the sunlight out," said Savchand.

He hopes that people will look at these outfits and feel inspired to create any design with any material available to them. It's possible.

The apparel will be on display for the community to see at the Phoenix Zoo on April 14 for its "Party for the Planet" Earth Day event.
