Ex-schools CFO re-indicted for fraud, conflict of interest

Former chief financial officer for the Scottsdale Unified School District Laura Smith is accused of approving purchase orders and change orders for a consulting company she and her sister had ownership interests in.

PHOENIX (AP) — A state grand jury has again indicted a former chief financial officer for the Scottsdale Unified School District on fraud and conflict of interest charges.

Laura Smith pleaded not guilty in court Monday. She could be facing trial in October.

Last June, Smith pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud schemes and nine counts of public official conflict of interest.

A judge set aside that indictment, but a grand jury last week indicted Smith on nearly identical charges.

Smith resigned from the district in January 2018.

She's accused of approving purchase orders and change orders between February and October of 2017 for a consulting company she and her sister had ownership interests in.

Smith allegedly signed off on change orders that increased the district's purchases from the consulting company.
