According to a recent report by the Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association, 866 teachers either abandoned or resigned their teaching jobs within the first four months of the 2017-2018 school year.

With school shootings like the recent massacre in Florida and talk of potentially arming teachers, is it having an impact in hiring local candidates?

According to Laura Telles, the Executive Director for Talen at Phoenix Union, the largest high school district in the state, the answer is no.

"I think people have a misconception associated with urban Phoenix that maybe we're dangerous or our schools are dangerous. We don't see that, I mean, come and check us out. Our schools are safe," Telles said.

Phoenix Union has 20 schools, and more than 27,000 students. Each year, they have an average of 100 to 150 spots to fill. This year that number is 100.

Telles attributes the school being innovative and keeping salary competitive as a factor in not struggling as much with a teacher shortage.

First year teachers earn a base salary of $40,702. Telles says, in Arizona, some districts start out at $30,000 on the low end and mid-forties on the high end.
