PHOENIX – Phoenix police are searching for a man suspected of shoplifting then crashing a vehicle into a swimming pool after a brief chase Friday morning.

A woman and 3-year-old child were in the back seat of the car at the time of the crash, according to police. They were not injured.

"That's all that worries me: My baby,” that’s all the woman offered on scene after police questioned her.

This crashed happened at home near the intersection of 59th Avenue and Palm Lane.

"He thought there was a way out, but he went straight into my pool,” said Hector Quiñones, the owner of the home where his children were home alone during the crash. "There could have been kids playing here. You never know."

Investigators said the suspect shoplifted from a nearby Family Dollar store and that he took off when officers spotted him.

Maybe half a mile away, the driver took a wrong turn into a cul-de-sac.

"It's a dead end, but instead of coming straight [into my home], thank god he went aside,” said Rosa Guerrero, who lives at the very middle of the dead-end street.

With nowhere to go, the car took out a brick wall and came to a stop dangling partially over the pool.

Guerrero helped the woman and baby, who were in the back seat.

The driver was soon gone.

"My son saw that the guy took off,” Quiñones said. “The driver jumped the wall."
