19-year-old dead, 1 person injured following shooting in Mesa

Officers responded to a shooting call where they located two victims, police say.

MESA, Ariz. — A 19-year-old has died and another was left with non-life-threatening injuries following a shooting near Alma School Road and Southern Avenue in Mesa on Friday night.

Officers responded to the scene where they located two victims, police said. One of the victims, Garry Anau, passed away early Saturday morning.

The victim's parents said that Anau was a hard worker. He worked for their charity, which focused on giving back to people back in Tonga.

They also said that Anau planned on studying at GCU to become a sports reporter. They have made a GoFundMe page.

The second victim has what officers reported as non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The victim has been classified as an investigative lead in the shooting by police.

The investigation is ongoing.
