Chandler parents face felony child abuse charges after failing to take sick son to ER

PHOENIX — A Chandler couple whose home was raided by police last month face felony charges of child abuse for failing to get medical care for their 2-year-old son, after a doctor warned them he might have a life-threatening fever.

Both Sarah Beck and Brooks Bryce face charges of "child abuse domestic violence," according to a police report obtained by 12 News.

The report says Beck failed to get medical treatment for the boy despite the doctor's warning, and refused to allow police and Arizona Department of Child Safety case workers to check on him.

Bryce is accused of failing to let officers and DCS workers check on his son.

The recommended child-abuse charge against the couple is a Class 4 felony for knowingly or intentionally placing a child in a situation in which his health is endangered.

Chandler police filed their charging recommendation this week with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office after a follow-up investigation by Chandler detectives.

A spokeswoman for County Attorney Bill Montgomery said Friday that she couldn't find Chandler's charging submission yet in her office's computer system.

The county attorney's office will ultimately decide whether to charge the couple.

Chandler police say they forced their way into the home in the early morning hours of Feb. 26 after DCS case workers obtained a court order to take temporary custody of the 2-year-old.

The police report says:

"The residents were given a final opportunity to exit and take their child to the hospital. Upon their failure to do so, the front door was breached by patrol officers and the family members were called out of the residence. Inside the residence, two additional children (aged four and six) were located who were also suffering similar symptoms to include vomiting."

The 2-year-old boy was later admitted to the hospital.

Brooks Bryce didn't respond to requests for comment.
