Glendale auto shop barely hanging on after owner battled COVID-19

The virus not only affected the Stiving family emotionally and physically, it's put a toll on the small business.

PEORIA, Ariz. — The COVID-19 pandemic has affected a lot of families.

Some have experienced long hospital stays and costly medical bills. But for the Stiving family, it also put a strain on their small business.

On April 9, Ken Stiving was rushed to the hospital as he battled COVID-19. He was having trouble breathing as he fought pneumonia. He spent a total of four months battling the virus and other complications, including 60 days on a ventilator, and he spent time at three different hospitals and rehab centers.

His family was only able to see him through FaceTime.

“I just wanted to see him and watch him breathe. It’s hard because you don’t have anybody listening to you,” said Christine Stiving, Ken’s wife.

After 124 days Ken is finally back home with family.

“Oh, I’m thrilled. I certainly missed them,” said Ken Stiving.

Ken has a long road ahead in his recovery. He still can’t move his legs or his right arm.

COVID-19 not only put an emotional and physical toll on the family, Ken’s Glendale auto shop – Ken’s Tire and Auto - is taking a beating financially.

“It’s just hanging on by a string though because times are really rugged out there right now,” said Ken Stiving.

Only Ken and his son-in-law work at the shop. His family has worked hard to keep the doors open while he’s been out.

“He’s fighting for is life. At least we can fight for his business.”

Just one person is able to work. They’ve been forced to limit services at the auto shop and pay bills with what little money the shop still brings in.

They say they didn’t qualify for any of the federal loans to help businesses survive the pandemic.

“I just wish the government would listen to the people who really didn’t get any help,” said Christine Stiving.

Despite everything that has happened the family is hopeful.

“It’s scary, but he’s alive and I’m OK with that.”

Ken will undergo physical and occupational therapy to help him regain his mobility. He wants to get back to working on cars once he regains his mobility.

The family set up a GoFundMe account to help with expenses.
