PHOENIX - The family of 10-year-old Christian Pearson is remembering a boy who was happy, loved video games and had a passion for basketball.
"He's never going to get to have that first girlfriend or him being in high school or a teenager," said Eric Pearson, the boy's father.
Pearson lives in Tucson and received a call Thursday saying his son was at Phoenix Children's Hospital after being flown in from Chino Valley. Local authorities say they received a phone call that afternoon from the boy's mother, 34-year-old Julianna Moreno, reporting the boy had stopped breathing.
Once police arrived they observed the boy had been severely burned and beaten all while allegedly tied up to a post inside the home. Moreno was arrested along with her boyfriend, 36-year-old Daniel Terry.
"Let me tell you, it was horrendous. Horrendous," said Andrea Pearson, the boy's grandmother. "We wondered at the time, "Why did he not run?", to find out that he was tied up."
The family donated the boy's organs, but some of the organs, according to family, were so badly bruised they could not be used.
The Chino Valley Police Department is recommending the Yavapai County Attorney's Office upgrade the charges against Moreno and Terry to first-degree murder as result of the boy's death.
A fundraising page has been set up to help support costs for a funeral.
Police are also asking the public to contact their department if they stopped at a garage sale being held by the couple on June 8th at their Chino Valley residence on the 1200 block of Poco Lane.
