PHOENIX —

We checked in with Team 12's gardening enthusiasts Mark Curtis and Tram Mai for some tips to help you get started.

Mark says he really enjoys gardening when he’s not giving viewers the evening news. He began developing a green thumb in St. Louis before he joined the 12 News team.

“I kind of got hooked on the taste of a homegrown tomatoThere’s something that gives me a lot of happiness about growing my own food,” Mark said.

You’ll find all the yummy classics in Mark’s backyard like tomatoes, zucchini, onions and a little later on this spring even cantaloupe

Mark’s tips:

A raised plant bed will keep critters from munching on your plants and veggies.

Use plant food to help nourish your growing garden.

For Tram gardening is a family affair. She admits her husband has the greener thumb, but the whole family enjoys growing vegetables, fruits and herbs.

"My kids absolutely love to garden. We've gotten them very involved at a very young age," Tram said.

Tram's tips:

Don’t over water your garden. She suggests using a drip system.

Overturn your soil. Dig it up every season before you plant.

Check out the Arizona almanac. It'll have a list of produce that is good by the month to plant.
