Monsoon season is here! How can you protect your home?

Tips to get your home ready for the wind, dust and rain.

PHOENIX - Whether you live here or are just visiting Arizona, staying safe in extreme weather conditions should be everyone’s priority.

In Arizona, monsoon begins June 15 and lasts until September 30. Conditions during the season include high winds, torrential rain and dust storms. Arizona also garners over half of the year’s rain during this time.

Those weather conditions add up to a possibly damaging season for homeowners and renters.

Shea Homes has put together a list to help homeowners prepare for the wrath of Mother Nature.

SIGN UP FOR WEATHER ALERTS

Be aware of flash flood warnings, dust storms and damaging winds.

CHECK YOUR ROOF

There’s nothing worse than coming home to a puddle of water and trying to find the source as water continues to pour in. Inspect your roof before the season begins or hire a roofing professional to do it for you.

PREPARE TREES AND LANDSCAPING

Protect your plants, trees and outdoor furniture on your patio before the monsoon storms hit. Strong winds can loosen soil, so be sure to stake down trees.

EVALUATE YOUR HOME'S DRAINAGE

You may need to hire a landscaping company to ensure your property has a proper drainage solution and that your yard isn’t pooling water during a rainstorm.

INSTALL OR CLEAN OUT RAIN GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

Remove any debris to ensure gutters are flowing and draining correctly. This should be done annually to make sure your gutters last as long as possible.

CLEAN OUT YOUR GARAGE

Clean out your garage and make room for your cars. Falling branches and hail frequently damage cars during the monsoon season.

SECURE YOUR PETS

Monsoon season brings unpredictable weather patterns that can be frightening for pets. Keep pets indoors during dust storms and secure any doggy doors.
