Friday storm wreaks havoc on Lake Pleasant boaters

Monsoon storms dumped rain, capsizing boats and leaving boaters in need of rescue.

The monsoon storm Friday night created some tense and frightening moments for boaters on Lake Pleasant.

The storm dumped rain and hail but the biggest problem was the wind and waves.

"Some of the swells were about 15 feet," said Tyrone Ward.

Several boats capsized because of the high waves and MCSO had to rescue several people.

"Some of the kids were terrified,” Ward said. “It was pretty bad.”

Gabe Balas was fishing from his 17-foot boat when the storm hit.

"It came out of nowhere,” said Balas. “There was no rain, no wind, it just hit.”

Fearing his boat was going to capsize in the giant waves, he sought cover in a small cove.

At least a few people had to be transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

It's unclear how many boats capsized or how many people had to be rescued.

Ward said the storm was so bad you couldn't see 5 feet in front of you. He tells 12 News he and his friends were blessed to make it back to shore safe.
