Skyline High School pitcher gets drafted to Arizona Diamondbacks

Boyd Vander Kooi was drafted to the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2017 MLB draft but for now, plans to continue his baseball career at ASU.

Mesa, Ariz. - It was a childhood dream turned reality.

"Yeah I got a call saying they drafted me which was pretty cool, not a lot of people get drafted," Skyline High School pitcher Boyd Vander Kooi said.

The Skyline pitcher was drafted to the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2017 MLB draft.

"I've been a Diamondbacks fan ever since I loved baseball," Vander Kooi said. "It was super surreal."

Vander Kooi is passing on the big leagues for now, but will still be playing baseball close to home. The recent high school graduate will continue his baseball career at Arizona State University.

"Usually every Friday and Saturday night when I was eight years old we'd go to all the ASU baseball games," Vander Kooi said. "Ever since then I've always wanted to play there."

Vander Kooi was the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, finishing his senior season with a 1.49 ERA. He struck out 61 batters in 47 innings.

The decision to wait on playing in the majors was challenging, but Vander Kooi is confident this is the right choice.

"It's going to make me mature a lot more, it's going to make me more comfortable," Vander Kooi said.

However, the dream to play professionally is still alive.

"Absolutely," Vander Kooi said. "I'd love to be in the big leagues."
