ASU, Coyotes ready for big hockey weekend in the desert

ASU hockey coach Greg Powers talks about the big hockey weekend coming up in Glendale.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals don't play until Monday night, so hockey is taking center stage out in Glendale this weekend.

The Arizona State Sun Devils will stage their home opener at Gila River Arena Saturday night and the Arizona Coyotes drop the puck on the 2016 season Saturday night.

  • Friday - Air Force vs. Arizona State 7:05 p.m.
  • Saturday - Philadelphia Flyers vs. Arizona Coyotes 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday - Air Force vs. Arizona State 2:30 p.m.

This is the second-straight year the Sun Devils have played some of their home games at Gila River Arena.

"I don't think we're here without the NHL in this market," said ASU head coach Greg Powers. "Our partnership with them (Coyotes) has been invaluable in every single way. Especially from a facilities standpoint. They've been top-notch to us from day one."

Arizona State's Sunday game against Air Force will also be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network, marking the first hockey broadcast in the network's history.
