Scottsdale Uber driver allegedly groped by NFL star

Uber, the ride sharing company and the NFL are investigating a claim from an Uber driver who stated she was grobed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - More than a year after an alleged groping incident, a woman is coming forward claiming an NFL quarterback inappropriately touched her while she was working as his Uber driver.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Jameis Winston denied the allegations in a statement:

“A news organization has published a story about me regarding an alleged incident involving a female Uber driver from approximately two years ago,” Winston said. “The story falsely accuses me of making inappropriate contact with this driver. I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her. The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters, I am addressing this false report immediately. At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.

“I am supportive of the national movement to raise awareness and develop better responses to the concerns of parties who find themselves in these types of situations, but this accusation is false. While I am certain that I did not make any inappropriate contact, I don’t want to engage in a battle with the driver and I regret if my demeanor or presence made her uncomfortable in any way.”

In an article published by BuzzFeed, the woman claims the incident occurred in the early-morning hours of March 13, 2016 when she was requested for a ride out of downtown Scottsdale.

The woman says a group of men approached her and informed her she would be providing services for the Heisman Trophy winner, who, according to her, was the only passenger in the car and sat in the front seat.

During the ride, the woman claims Winston was behaving badly and allegedly shouted homophobic slurs at pedestrians.

The groping allegedly occurred while waiting in a drive-thru line at Los Betos Mexican Food -- that's when the woman claims Winston touched her crotch for a few seconds.

The Scottsdale Police Department told 12 News the victim has not filed a report or contacted their department about the incident.

Uber responded to 12 News with a statement confirming the incident:

"The behavior the driver reported is disturbing and wrong. The rider was permanently removed from the app shortly after we learned of the incident.”

The ride share app also confirmed the driver reported the incident shortly after she claims it happened.

The NFL is conducing an investigation and the Buccaneers are cooperating with that investigation.
